Home'sCOOL
Home'SCOOL! Learn to Skate and Learn to Play Hockey programs offered by the Chiller provide school-aged participants of all skill levels a challenging and rewarding program that will enable them to skate recreationally and to pursue a competitive path if desired.
With more than 5,000 students each year, the Chillers have become nationally known as home to one of the largest ice education programs in the country. A complete recreational skating program is offered year-round with classes for all ages and abilities. To fulfill the needs of area homeschool participants, in January of 2000, the Chiller kicked off a daytime "Learn to Skate" and "Learn to Play Hockey" program. Timed with the arrival of Columbus' first NHL hockey, the Columbus Blue Jackets, increasing interest in ice sports have made this program a perfect complement to physical education obligations.
Class sessions typically last eight weeks and include:
- 1 hour ice time
- Weekly 30 minute lesson taught by professional instructors
- 30 minute free skate time to practice newly learned skills
- Skate rental
- VIP Value Card offering discounts
About The Classes
All classes are for school-aged children and are divided according to skill level. Beginning Learn to Skate Class levels are designed by the United States Figure Skating Association (USFSA) and introduce skaters to the fundamental moves.
Upon completion, skaters will have the basic skills necessary to advance to more specialized areas of skating or hockey.
Learn To Skate
Each Learn to Skate beginner 8 week session consists of weekly one-hour classes with a 30 minute professionally instructed lesson and 30 minute "freeskate" where participants can practice their newly learned skills!
Once a participant has completed the first two levels of the USFSA basic skills, they may then choose to advance within the figure skating levels, or transistion to hockey.
Learn To Play Hockey
Those who choose a hockey path will advance to the Pre-Hockey levels, which teach the basics of hockey and are a prerequisite to play advanced, or Junior Jackets hockey. Pre-Hockey classes are an hour in length with a half-hour lesson followed by a half hour open skate.
Home'SCHOOL Policies
Helmets are required for all pre-hockey and above participants and are recommended for skaters in all levels.
Junior Jackets players are required to wear the following equipment: Helmet with full face cage, Protective Supporter, Ice Hockey Stick, Hockey Gloves, Hockey Pants, Elbow and Shin/Knee Pads.
Full payment is required at the time of registration.
Refunds are not granted for missing individual classes. They are only granted if special circumstances prevent the skater from participating/completing the series of classes. Refund requests must be in writing, carry a per lesson charge, a $15 non-refundable registration fee, and require 6 weeks to process.
Students are required at all times to follow the safety and conduct rules posted throughout the buildings.
