FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Columbus, Ohio – The varsity ice hockey teams of Olentangy Liberty, Olentangy Orange and Olentangy high schools will participate in the inaugural Hockey Week in Olentangy benefitting ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), taking place at The Chiller North from Sunday, January 29th through Friday, February 3rd and featuring three great Olentangy school district varsity ice hockey games.
The three Olentangy ice hockey teams are proud to combine great high school varsity ice hockey competition with a single common goal of raising money and awareness for ALS research also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Hockey Week in Olentangy begins Sunday, January 29th when Olentangy hosts Olentangy Orange at 5pm at the Chiller North. The action continues on Wednesday, February 1st at the Chiller North with a 3pm afternoon ice hockey match between Olentangy Orange and Olentangy Liberty. The final game will be played Friday night, February 3rd with the puck dropping at the Chiller North at 7pm
Each school will be donating proceeds from ticket sales from each game to the ALS Columbus Chapter.
Liberty Hockey Boosters president, Rob Bergamesca said, “Any time you can take three highly competitive games between rivals and combine it with a common goal of giving back to the community in which we live, something good has been created which each team can be proud of regardless of wins and loses”.
The teams will also be playing for the rights to hold onto what is being called the “Olentangy School District Dr. Scott Davis Champps Cup”. This trophy has been named after former Olentangy School District superintendent Dr. Scott Davis who was instrumental in getting Ohio High School Athletic Association sanctioned varsity ice hockey by the school board beginning with Liberty High School for the 2008/2009 school year. Olentangy Orange and Olentangy both followed with varsity teams the following year. The trophy also contains the Champps Americana logo in appreciation for their sponsorship of the trophy.
“Dr. Davis really knew very little about ice hockey when he helped us gain approval for our first season”, Bergamesca said. He quickly became a fan of the game and the enthusiasm shown by the large student body that came to cheer on their new school sport.
Dr. Davis was diagnosed with ALS and passed away at the young age of 36 on December 10th, 2010. “I really wish this was something we could have started while Dr. Davis was still with so he could have enjoyed the event with us but we are proud we now have the event up and running. It is a great tribute to a man who believed in increasing the opportunities available for all Olentangy student athletes”, said Bergamesca.
